Intense Pulsed Light (IPL / BBL)

Brown spot removal, redness reduction, and photo-rejuvenation — with minimal downtime.

About IPL / BBL

IPL and BBL treatments target sun damage, pigmentation, redness, rosacea, and visible vessels while brightening skin and improving overall clarity with minimal downtime. Tribeca Park Dermatology offers two devices — the InMode Lumecca IPL and Sciton BBL (BroadBand Light) — for the widest range of IPL technology in NYC.

Best For

  • Brown spots
  • Sun damage
  • Rosacea
  • Redness
  • Broken capillaries
  • Photo-rejuvenation

How It Works

  1. 01

    Consultation

Your dermatologist evaluates your skin tone, concerns, and history to confirm IPL or BBL is right for you and selects the device best suited to your goals.

  2. 02

    Treatment

A cool gel is applied to the treatment area. The handpiece delivers brief flashes of light selectively absorbed by pigment and blood vessels. Most sessions take 15 to 30 minutes.

  3. 03

    Recovery & Results

Brown spots typically darken before flaking off over 7 to 14 days. Redness improves with each session. Positive changes are often visible after the first treatment, with full results developing across a series of 2 to 3 sessions.

What to Expect

  • Minimal downtime — mild redness or warmth typically resolves within 24 hours
  • Brown spots will appear darker before naturally exfoliating — this is expected
  • Best results from a series of 2 to 3 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart
  • Maintenance every 6 to 12 months to preserve results
  • Choice of two advanced devices — InMode Lumecca and Sciton BBL
  • Performed by board-certified dermatologists

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between IPL and BBL?

BBL (BroadBand Light) is Sciton's proprietary form of IPL with optimized filters and a uniform pulse. The InMode Lumecca is a high-output IPL device. Both technologies deliver broad-spectrum light to target pigment and vessels — your dermatologist selects the right device based on your skin and goals.

Why do my brown spots look darker after treatment?

This is expected and a sign the treatment is working. Pigmented spots rise to the surface and appear darker (sometimes called "coffee grounds") before naturally flaking off over 7 to 14 days. Avoid scrubbing or picking — let them shed on their own.

How many treatments will I need?

Most patients see meaningful results from a series of 2 to 3 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart. More extensive sun damage or vascular concerns may require additional sessions. Many patients maintain results with a single treatment every 6 to 12 months.

Is IPL / BBL safe for darker skin tones?

IPL and BBL are best suited for lighter skin types (Fitzpatrick I–IV). For darker skin tones (V–VI), the risk of pigment changes is higher, and we typically recommend alternative treatments such as Moxi or Clear + Brilliant. Your dermatologist will confirm whether IPL or BBL is appropriate at consultation.

Is it painful?

Most patients describe the sensation as a quick, hot rubber band snap. Treatments are generally well-tolerated without numbing for face and neck. Cool gel is applied for comfort and the treatment is typically brief.

How is downtime?

Mild redness and warmth typically last several hours up to 24 hours. Most patients return to normal activities the same day. You'll want to avoid sun exposure, hot showers, and intense exercise for 24 to 48 hours after treatment.

Can I do IPL / BBL year-round?

IPL is best performed in fall, winter, and early spring when sun exposure is minimal. Treatment is possible in summer with strict sun avoidance and daily SPF 30+, but pre-existing tan can affect candidacy. We'll guide you on timing.
